# Rate of Current Increase in an Ideal Inductor for a Fixed Applied Voltage

If a fixed DC voltage is applied to an "ideal" inductor (one that has zero resistance), then the current passing through the inductor will increase in value linearly with time. The rate of current rise (di/dt) is given by the formula:

MathML formulaFormula ImageStraight text formula
$di dt = V L$ di/dt = V / L

Where:

di / dt = Rate of current rise, Amps per second

V = voltage, Volts

I = current, Amps
